Four months post fractured left tibia/fibula from being crashed into by a minivan has allowed me lots of down time to work on this current blog. It’s best viewed on a larger screen vs. a phone to appreciate the details that are in the carefully composed photographs.
Manhole covers or: Access covers, Maintenance hole covers, Utility covers, Inspection covers, Service covers, Access plates; smaller lids are Hand hole covers… Check out the surrounding pavement or pavers. They are sometimes haphazard & sometimes cool looking.
To be walked on, driven over, admired, used to access, rarely cared for, often stolen, just part of the landscape, just there, art installations, worked around during construction, silent observers of events around them. Most commonly they are round (so they won’t fall in) but I did see elliptical one. The covers can also be square or rectangular. Their design sometimes gives a clue as to what is covered & accessible.

Naomi’s cousins Mimi & Robert Melnick published this book in 1996. We did not find out about it & get a copy of the book until I was well into noticing & photographing manhole covers.
They started in the 1970’s when they were looking for one as wall decoration for their home.

This Berkeley, CA artistic storm sewer is, as of a 2019 city ordinance, covering a gender neutral “maintenance hole.”

We were in Japan in 2004 & I never noticed these covers.

“Why Japan is Obsessed with Manhole Cover Designs https://japaninsides.com/why-japan-is-obsessed-with-manhole-cover-designs-34309 In the 1980s, rural municipalities began creating unique designs for their drain hole covers in an effort to get locals on board with costly sewer-works projects. This way, taxpayers had something tangible to enjoy in return for their hard-earned yen. As it would turn out, the idea proved to be a good one, and there are now over 12,000 unique artistic designs among the 15 million manhole covers nationwide.”

MADE IN USA
"Pattern current (as of 1994) in the catalogue of Campbell Foundry of Paterson, New Jersey. In New York City, where kids playing stickball used manhole covers to measure the distance they could bat a ball, scores were referred to as one-sewer or two-sewer." MANHOLE COVERS by Mimi & Rob’t Melnick
I never could play stickball. it was hard enough for me to hit the ball with a regular bat much less a broomstick.

Looking down in Brooklyn one can spot some really vintage locally made examples. This one is on the walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
“While the decorative qualities of manhole covers hold great appeal, the original purpose of the surface designs was not purely ornamental. Early covers were patterned to provide traction for horses' hoofs, the raised configuration serving to prevent the animals (and the buggies they drew) from skidding on the metal.” From MANHOLE COVERS by Mimi Melnick Photographs by Robert A. Melnick - 1994.

Sometime in the mid 1970’s Chicago. I wasn’t noticing manhole covers yet. Instead I was busy photographing Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion.

Sometimes the covers are admired or just a resting place.

Sometimes they are cared for.

Or not. This one was replaced without attention to detail after some work was completed.

Missed cleaning that cover.

Mostly they end up looking like this with the most usual litter being cigarette butts.

They're walked over without any thought.

Too many of these Hand hole lids were being stolen so locks were installed in them.
“…course, if removal of lids is too easy, theft becomes a problem.
Though the weight of the cover is the greatest deterrent to thievery, lids are outfitted with various locking devices for added protection.” MANHOLE COVERS by Mimi & Rob’t Melnick

In Manhattan, lid stealing problem solved by filling up the removal tool access holes.
