Some folks mentioned they’d like to see photos of the scenes we noticed on our 2,484 mile road trip. Michael said, commenting on the "YOU CAN DRIVE..." blog, we were in Zion & then poof the Grand Canyon. What happened in each place & in between, he wanted to know? This version of our recent road trip is in two parts & includes stops in Modesto, Bakersfield, Lake Las Vegas , Kodachrome Basin State Park & the Death Valley, Zion, & Bryce Canyon Nat’l Parks.

First stop had been Modesto for coffee & next Fresno for lunch. George suggested we check...

...the Tower District, not far off Hwy 99, for a restaurant.

Irene's...

...was perfect.

A mural outside Irene's. "Two Can Tango" has been our tag line since our 1978 wedding invitation.

Across the street from Irene's.

Chosen beers poured & canned right before my eyes. I had the Lodgepole Double Pilsner when we were boating on Lake Las Vegas. It was delicious & potent.

They don't like Gov. Newsom here'bouts.

On to Bakersfield to spend the night at the Padre Hotel. The Bakersfield sound is a sub-genre of country music developed in the mid-to-late 1950s in & around Bakersfield. It was the first subgenre of country music significantly influenced by rock and roll, relying heavily on electric instrumentation & a strongly defined backbeat. Buck Owens and Merle Haggard cut their teeth at the bars & honkytonks around Bakersfield before gaining international prominence. Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace is an all-in-one restaurant, museum and music venue. The show was sold out that night & it was not walking distance from the Padre.

Lots of murals in Bakersfield. This was on a wall across the street from the Padre Hotel.

The 18Hundred Restaurant. The low riders were across the street.

Art deco KRESS Bldg. c. 1931. Kress & Co. out of biz in 1980. Renovated & has been an office bldg. since.

This was the last operating Woolworth luncheonette counter in America. (Who knew?!) It's been closed since COVID hit.

All the Friday night action seemed to be a two blocks from The Padre Hotel, on Wall Street.

Folks lined up for a tattoo parlor

Read carefully.

On Wall St. a mural depicting the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.

And across the alley a mural of drinking, gambling...

"Searles Valley Minerals Inc. is a raw materials mining & production company based in Overland Park, Kansas. It is owned by the Indian company Nirma."

It has major operations in the Searles Valley & in Trona, California where it is the town's largest employer. The company produces borax, boric acid, soda ash, salt cake, & salt. The Trona facility extracts and ships 1.75 million tons of chemicals per year.

"The Argus Cogeneration Plant is a coal-fired power station located adjacent to...

"There are allegations of arsenic poisoning of plant workers."

Still, many are quite patriotic.

When I was teaching at the Univ. of the Pacific School of Dentistry, one of the photographers had worked for "Arizona Highways" magazine. Since then I've wanted to drive on roads & take photographs like he inspired me.

We chatted for a long time with a couple from Belgium; politics, the world, the Ukraine... The small country of Belgium had already taken in & were absorbing 100,000 Ukranian refugees.

Sunrise from the veranda of our room.

Tunnel from the parking lot to the interior of The Inn At Death Valley. The likes of Marlon Brando would use this entrance when they were guests here.

Viva Las Vegas - seen from the road. We managed to totally bypass it.

Housing in Lake Las Vegas.

Our room was somewhere here, without a balcony. We had no towels in the room. The housekeeper who replaced them said showgirls had used so many to remove their make-up they were behind in washing them.

"BAR. Gaming, drinking, pool! Loose machines! Huge liquor selection..." Overton, NV. On the road to Springdale, UT & Zion Nat'l Park.

Overton, NV - Doorway to nowhere.

Finally we found espresso in La Verkin, UT on the outskirts of our destination, Springdale.

Then another coffee shop. There were many here.

I was so amazed at the trees that could grow & thrive just anywhere.

Court of the Patriarchs as seen from shuttle bus. The shuttle buses were great & most of the drivers gave an excellent commentary.

“A huge rock-avalanche landslide collapsed off a peak named the Sentinel 4,800 years ago, dammed the Virgin River & created a lake that lasted 700 years until it filled with sediment, producing the flat, cottonwood-dotted canyon floor enjoyed today.”

-

We had taken a 7:10 shuttle to have breakfast at the lodge. There had been no line then, but now...

Zion Canyon Brew Pub adjacent to our lodgings in Cable Mounytain Lodge. With a 20% discount here...

...we had two dinners & lunches here during our stay. They had plenty of young wait staff. We liked River who was born on a river...

-

At 3:30, we took the Jeep tour. (Zion Jeep Tour Premium Package). Murphy described how this property owner has much coveted water rights. Note the 100 year old iron truss bridge in the background.

Murphy stopped often to descibe the flora & fauna; the lizard's tails left deep indentations in the topsoil. They were big because it being so arid, they had no predators.

Looking west at Zion Nat'l Park & below the towns of Virgin & appropriately named...

...Rockville.

The young guy behind the counter said that when he started working here he had never suspected people would come by & buy rocks. Of course, we did!

Happy residents of Springdale. Despite all the coffee shops & the brewery, this is a very Mormon town. If you get a chance, check out Under the Banner of Heaven on HULU. It’s an eye opener. Murphy, having been once been married to a Mormon (They now prefer LDS) explained a lot.

SNOW!

Garfield is the least densely populated county in UT. We would be headed to the county seat, Panguitch, in a couple of days.

"The Mossy Cave Trail in the northern end of Bryce Canyon National Park...

...offers hikers the chance to experience up close the hoodoos and spires of the park without having to descend 1,000 feet to the bottom of the amphitheatres."

"From 1890-1892 Mormon pioneers labored with picks & shovels to carve an irrigation ditch from the East Fork of the Sevier River, through the Paunsaugunt Plateau, into this canyon."

Kodachrome Basin State Park. Pronghorn antelope. Thanks Kim.

Kodachrome Basin State Park is known for its unique sedimentary pipes.

Kodachrome Basin State Park.

Kodachrome Basin State Park. I couldn't pass up a park with this name. I started in photography using Kodachrome 64 slide film. 50 years later the colors are still brilliant. It took them a few years but in the late 1960's, Eastman Kodak gave them permission to use the name.

Kodachrome Basin State Park.
Who can argue with Paul Simon’s lyrics?
“Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
Give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I had a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama, don't take my Kodachrome away.”
They did take Kodachrome away. At least they left us a beautiful park.

A mini, mighty dust storm that appeared out of nowhere.

That property must have good water rights!

Tropic. Imagine plowing with that! There was a lot of this antique farming equipment seen scattered about roadsides during our roadtrip.
